Planned Giving
A donor can leave property to charity by including a bequest in his or her Last Will and Testament or through a Charitable Remainder Trust.
To donate through your Last Will and Testament, Through your will, you can give to The Senior Life Foundation, Inc., a specific amount of money (for example, $500), a specific piece of personal property (such as your car), or even leave a percentage amount of the residue of your estate (ie, "I give to the Senior Life Foundation, Inc., fifteen percent (15%) of the residue of my estate.")
To donate through a trust, a Charitable Remainder Trust is an irrevocable structure established by a donor to provide an income stream to the income beneficiary, while the public charity or private foundation receives the remainder value when the trust terminates. Such a trust makes its payments, either of a fixed amount or a percentage of trust principal, to whomever the donor chooses to receive income. Normally, the donor may claim a charitable income tax deduction, and may not have to pay an immediate capital gains tax when the trust disposes of the appreciated asset and purchases other property as it diversifies its portfolio of trust property. At the end of the trust term, the charity receives whatever amount is left in the trust.
