The Case for Helping Seniors
Over 14% of Duval County residents are between 60 and 75 years of age and above.
Northeast Florida's senior population is expected to grow by at least 66% in the next 15 years.
The financial status of our county's seniors is troubling, with almost 13,000 living below the poverty level. Over 18,000 are in the 125% of the poverty level, close to half of whom are minorities. Of those in the 65+ category, over 21,000 live with two or more disabilities.
Among the needs that have been filled by The Senior Life Foundation, Inc., include:

Here are some examples of how The Senior Life Foundation has helped Duval area seniors:
Marianne’s Crisis – Marianne is a 63-year-old woman dependent upon oxygen and a nebulizer. Her total monthly income is $690 a month. In January, a water leak caused her JEA bill to skyrocket to over $900. She is paying off the excess charges in monthly installments. Friends at her senior center suggested that she call SLF when they learned that she couldn’t had gotten behind and couldn’t pay her bill. (Call received June 8, 2009.)
Crisis Resolution – The SLF volunteer verified the amount due, and SLF sent Marianne a check for $250 (payable to JEA) on the same day her request was received. The volunteer also identified another human services agency for additional dollars to help Marianne pay the next and final installment and get back on her feet.
Rewards of Volunterring - I am Saundra Kidd, Board member (VP Administration) but more importantly, I am a regular volunteer who answers our hot line. I can not begin to tell you how blessed it is to assist our Seniors in need. I look forward to my turn on the phone just to have the honor to meet and get to know our Seniors. For many, this phone call is their first cry for help; for others it is part of an ongoing struggle.
