Volunteers are always needed and welcomed!
We are a totally volunteer organization. A constant pressing need is for individuals willing to take calls from the seniors who ask for help. Every effort has been made to make this process as simple and time-friendly as possible.
The willing volunteer will be trained before answering calls. When ready, the person will access the messages left on the Senior Life Foundation phone line at his/her convenience (but within the same day as we are proud of our rapid response time in order to meet their emergencies). The volunteer then asks very specific questions to be sure the caller is qualified to receive our funding, which is topped out at $250 for a one-time-only assist. If not qualified, the caller is so informed and the volunteer makes every effort to guide the person to another agency that possibly could help and/or sends a brochure to the person giving them resources that could be of future help to them. (SLF will provide a supply of brochures to anyone taking the calls). If the person qualifies for funding, the volunteer confirms the information such as the total of their JEA bill, their phone bill or possibly their rent to name a few examples. When this has been accomplished, the volunteer calls the treasurer to ask that she mail a check to the senior.
Volunteers need to be sensitive to the needs of the seniors, able to make judgments about their eligibility and careful to follow through in a timely way. Volunteers usually take calls for a 7-day period. Other volunteer assignments are also available and anyone interested in helping should call the SLF phone number and someone will discuss the various opportunities.

An Open Letter to Our Volunteers
Hello everyone,
I am answering phones this week as Francis Simon is
having some medical issues this week. Francis, hope all is well with you and I
know that the other ladies will join me with special prayers for you. I wanted
to share a call with you that I answered today regarding a sweet lady that has
many medical issues and no air conditioning. We were able to provide funds to
have a new fan motor installed tomorrow. I know that she will be able to sleep
well tomorrow night. She cried and cried and explained that she had no one to
help her and she just prayed to God to please lead her & sure enough He led
her to our Foundation. I was overcome with gratitude that with Gods help we are
able to bring relief and hope to so many. I know that God smiles down on each
of you for the help and joy that you provide to those that need it the most. I
also know that sometime you are dealing with your own problems and the last
thing that you want to do is deal with the Foundation phones but then along
comes a call and an expression of thanks from some senior that you have helped
to let you know that you truly do make a difference in their lives & in this
world.
You are all so special and I thank each of you for your
dedication and help.
